Flush dietary supplements are available in many grocery stores, and they’re often touted as a more convenient, less expensive alternative to probiotics, the probiotic-rich foods that are commonly used to help prevent or treat allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, bloating and other digestive problems.
But some people aren’t convinced.
In an effort to find out if flush dietary supplements really are better for you than probiotics and if they can actually help you get more of your daily vitamin A and C, we asked nutrition experts to help us understand their claims.
Dr. Mark Wahlberg, a nutritionist and founder of the Weston A. Price Foundation, told us that people who are looking for a probiotics-free diet should look for supplements that are low in sugar, protein and fat.
“Most probiotic supplements are designed to provide more vitamin A,” he said.
“But a flush diet supplement is designed to supplement your vitamin A needs.
People who are trying to get the most benefit from probiotics don’t necessarily want a probiosis-free supplement.”
Wahlberg recommended that people check out a probionic supplement before making any changes to their diet.
“There’s no harm in taking a probiotica supplement if you’re trying to improve your vitamin B12 and zinc,” he explained.
“But if you have a lot of dietary sugar, you should avoid probiotics altogether.”
Dr. J.B. Hand, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota, said that if probiotics can help you build a healthy gut, then they should be a part of your diet.
“I’ve found that most people don’t feel good if they have sugar in their diet,” he told ABC News.
