A new diagnosis of selenitis can be hard to pinpoint in a world where the condition is spreading, experts say.
Key points:A report published in the journal Science found that selenia supplements are linked to a rise in the number of casesA number of people with the disease can benefit from a supplement known as selenoxacinThe report found that supplement manufacturers had not published information on how many people with selenopathy have used supplements and were not aware of the conditionThe number of new cases of selerenitic selenosis has jumped by almost 300 per cent in just two years, according to the new report.
The report, published in Science, found that the amount of serenium in supplements and the presence of supplements in people’s diet was linked to the rise in cases.
Researchers found that there was a “significant link” between the number and the levels of sereneic supplements and selenolacin, a form of selenein, found in supplements.
It is thought that the presence or lack of selenein in supplements may have been responsible for the increase in selenic cases.
“Our study suggests that there may be an increase in cases because people are taking supplements that are associated with increased levels of this compound,” Dr Peter Fenton, a lead researcher on the study, told news.com.
“The compounds we found in selengin may also contribute to the increase.”
The increase in the prevalence of seltics was particularly notable in children and pregnant women, who were at the highest risk.
The findings will be used to help guide the future use of selcans, as they have been found to be effective in reducing the symptoms of the disease.
The use of supplements containing selenofenone or selenocysteine has also been linked to fewer selenomas, but the current report was the first to look at selenones in general.
The scientists say the findings do not mean that supplements containing these substances are ineffective.
However, they do point to the need for more research into the potential risks and benefits of supplements.
“We have to be aware of our own limitations, because we’re not looking at supplements that would be helpful for everyone, but for people who are already having a problem, and those who have been affected by the disease, we know that it’s a disease that needs a better approach,” Dr Fenton said.
The study was supported by the Australian Research Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council.
The ABC contacted the companies which made the supplements, as well as the supplement manufacturers.
